Peter Pfaffelhuber
The mathematical institute at the University of Freiburg has been home to my research group since 2008. On the one hand, we like interdisciplinary research and teaching more than some of our colleagues, but on the other hand, we always come back to stochastics as the main focus of our work.
Research
My research has three goals:
- Stochastics is the basis for understanding in the life sciences. Application areas that we work on include population genetics, forensic genetics and neuroscience.
- The characterization and convergence of stochastic processes can be studied through (so-called) martingale problems. We are working on developing new convergence results using this technique.
- In recent years, mathematicians have been able to formalize their research results using the Lean Theorem prover. We are working on expanding the stochastics section of the corresponding library.
Projects
- Together with Angelika Rohde and Sabine Lutz-Bonengel, I am project leader in a project on forensic genetics in the special research area Small Data.
- I am currently a member of the board of directors of Freiburger Zentrums für Datenanalyse und Modellbildung (FDM).
- I am currently a member of the board of directors of Freiburg Advanced Center of Education (FACE).
